Wait, Who All Died?

OK, hard to miss Michael Jackson passing. But who else all died this past week? Quick, tell me, before they're totally forgotten...

Most entertaining quote I've read so far on Michael Jackson's death: "Once he dies, he doesn't have any obligation to perform."

My first reaction, was, well, duh. Then my second thought was that if zombies could be made of celebrities, concert promoters would have houngans/bokors on staff.

The third thought was that if anyone famous was already a zombie, it would have been Michael Jackson.

The trouble with me mourning his death is that I already mourned him lost decades ago. But I still have sympathy for his loved ones, and all those who loved him, for whatever reason. And I feel bad for all those who only ever knew him as what he turned into, without loving him before he changed.

Ed McMahon, damn. Once again upstaged. And Farrah, that's sad. They'd been covering her for weeks, and now they're going to drop her story.

The media's idea of the length mourning time and the actual needed mourning time are way, way off. I really hope people out there aren't learning to mourn based on the TV. Or the Internets.

Hey, those ticket holders in London may now be expecting the best staging of Thriller ever. Got to rein in those expectations.

And I don't know... maybe I'm just too much of an emotionally repressed Irishman, but can one really mourn a celebrity? I mean, I have some empathy for the family, but it doesn't really affect my life at all. Except for maybe hammering home my ow increasing age and mortality.

Weird follow-up thought: last Friday, at my sister's party, the most insistent request I got was from someone wanting to dance to some Michael Jackson. Upon searching my library, I couldn't find anything other than the Jackson 5. I remember promising myself to buy a few more songs from his first solo album, but didn't get around to it.

Now I'm just one of millions running to buy. Maybe I'll stick with what I've got.

David Carradine, as well, in case you missed it.

Ah, no. Hard to miss that one, and it was more than a week ago. I think. Weeks do go by quickly.

SURELY there is an Internet site for this kind of thing. I can't have [info]karlchristian, [info]editswlonghair and [info]telepresence as my Voices for All Deaths: they'd slip up and miss something sometime.

I actually almost missed David Carradine! That happened during my trip to Berlin and didn't find out until I got home a week later! Freaky story, that. Has Michael Hutchense taught people NOTHING?!?

Over on Facebook, my brother-in-law is waging a one-man battle to have people remember Sky Saxon of the Seeds. As he put it, "Definately [sic] the wrong media day for a cult rock figure to die. What was his publicist thinking?"

Holy crap! How did I miss both Dom DeLuise and Bea Arthur? Clearly the selection of fags and chubby-chasers on my Flist is woefully inadequate.
